William Gervin "Sarge"Beddow, 88, of Weatherford passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, with his family by his side.
Sarge could be on a poster for how hard work and determination can lead to many great things in life.
William was born March 7, 1929, in Somerset, Ky., to Clyde and Clova Beddow. He grew up during the years of the Great Depression, was an orphan at age 12, yet studied in school and graduated high school as the class valedictorian.
Sarge is a retired master sergeant in The United States Air Force. He joined the Army Air Corps and by graduation the Air Force had branched off, and he retired with 30 years of honorable service. He worked as a tail gunner, as a strategic air command instructor; and as a senior enlisted noncommissioned officer, he was tasked as a logistics supervisor. Sarge loved his family; he sent money back home during his early years of service so his sisters and brothers wouldn't have to do without. William was a veteran of The Korean, Vietnam and Cold Wars. Sarge was the commander of The American Legion post 1 in Commerce, Texas; Amvets Post 92; board member of the veterans committee at Texas A&M, regularly volunteered at Meals For A Day in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and volunteered at a children's home in Rantoul, Ill. Sarge loved spending time with his family and friends; but if he had any time alone, he was playing on his iPad or on Facebook.
William is survived by his daughters, Patricia Beddow Gaines, Vicki Beddow Hedges, Rebecca Beddow Thorman and husband Michael, and Barbara Beddow Benson; sons Dana Beddow and Stephen Beddow; sister Jean Beddow; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Audrey Beddow; parents Clyde and Clova Beddow; son William B. Beddow; son-in-law Dennis Gaines; sister June Beddow and brother Robert Beddow.
Burial service will be in East Texas at a later date. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at his home, 326 Beaumont Dr., Weatherford, Texas 76086. Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel of Weathearford is in charge of arrangements.
