Text size

Lisa Ann Cartwright was born Feb. 20, 1955. She passed from this Earth Nov. 6, 2017.
Lisa was born in Knox City, Texas, to Mary and Al Cartwright of Munday.
She spent her growing up and school years in Munday, graduating as salutatorian of the 1973 class at Munday High School. She was Miss MHS, Student Council president, and was involved in and an officer in the National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, Future Homemakers of America, choir, band, Who's Who in MHS and numerous other achievements and honors.
She attended East Texas State University where she received degrees bachelor's in Sociology, master's in Education and was only two credits short of her doctorate in Education due to her library and computer information and systems certifications. She and first husband Jim Peek, the father of her two children, were married 14 years and lived in Commerce.
After graduation, Lisa was a rural welfare case worker, checking on and attending to the needs of impoverished families throughout the Commerce area, with special emphasis on children and the elderly. She then was the owner of a women's boutique in Commerce before entering the public education field, to which she devoted the rest of her career.
Lisa taught school at Commerce ISD, middle school and language arts; Lake Dallas ISD as middle school language arts teacher and also taught ESL students, and Irving ISD in computer information systems and librarian.
Her love of reading and her expertise helped others led to her influence of many hundreds, if not thousands, of public school students' reading success.
She retired and moved to Van Alstyne in 2015 to escape the hustle and bustle of Dallas. After retirement, Lisa devoted a great deal of her time to what she loved most - her granddaughters.
She is survived by significant other Lenny Benedetto of Van Alstyne and son Tony and children Emily, Michael, Sarah and Jennie; daughter Rachel and husband Seth Flutcher and daughters Calla and Daphne of Frederick, Colo,; son Jaron Peek, wife Tiffany and daughter Kaili of Fort Worth; brother Lou and wife Janis of Austin and their children Ali and husband Alex Bailey and son Sam of Abilene; son Cliff, fiancé Shannon and son Gunnar of Fresno, Calif.; sister Cathy and husband David Martin of Heath and children, Randall Martin, wife Dani and son Luke; son Phillip Martin; daughter Samantha Martin; daughter Kate Martin and daughter Maddisen and son Jensen.
Lisa will be remembered for many things: her independence, her love of family, her love of teaching and her intensity toward helping students learn, and certainly her unique humor and outlook on life and her infectious laugh. The family asks donations in her honor go to Munday City-County Library, P.O. Box 268, Munday, TX 76371.
Services were held Nov. 11 at Munday Church of Christ with Terry Cartwright officiating.
