Lance Kirk Thornton, 47, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Baylor Medical Center-Dallas after a three-week stay in ICU due to heart complications.
Mr. Thornton's Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Three Rusty Nails Church in Cooper, Texas.
Mr. Thornton was born Jan. 27, 1969, in Pascaguola, Miss., to Kenneth Dee Thornton and Peggy Wilz Thornton (later McLeod) of Mississippi. He then lived in Moss Point and later Lucedale, Miss., where he attended Rocky Creek Elementary and then George County High School. He later moved to Texas and attended college at Texas A&M University-Commerce where he met his wife, Stephanie. Thornton married Stephanie Kennimer on Feb. 7, 1998, in Cooper, Texas. At the time of his death, Thornton resided in Cooper with his wife and two children — daughter Bailey (17) and son Chance (14).
Mr. Thornton was an employee of Genesis Home Health and Northeast Texas Broadband in Paris, Texas. He was also an umpire for baseball and softball on the weekends when his children did not have sports activities themselves. Thornton was very proud to be a part of the Team Citius select baseball family where he coached and helped run the organization. Thornton also played an important role in the local Dixie leagues in Commerce, Texas, where he resided for 20-plus years. He believed that all who were interested should have the opportunity to play and learn the game that he had a passion for his entire life. Thornton was truly a man of faith, family, friends and baseball. He loved each of these things deeply, and that love showed every day through his actions (1 Peter 4:8).
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by his mother, his father, and stepfather Tommy McLeod, all of Mississippi.
He leaves on Earth his wife, Stephanie Thornton of Cooper; his two beautiful children, Bailey and Chance Thornton of Cooper; and his stepmother, Trish Thornton of Commerce. He leaves the family of his oldest brother, Bruce Thornton (49) of Mississippi, wife Debbie, and their children, Michael and Brad and wife Krystyn. He also leaves the family of his younger brother, Patrick Thornton (43) of Cooper, wife Erin and their sons, Jackson and Ryan. Thornton also has two stepsisters, Michelle Cox and Nikki Scales with Danielle, Anthony, Lane, and Taylor as nieces and nephews with several great-nieces and nephews. Through marriage to Stephanie, his mother-in-law is Pam Collard of Cooper. He has one brother-in-law, Chris Collard of Mt. Pleasant, and a sister-in-law, Brittany Collard of Cooper. He also has eight nieces and nephews, Hayden, Shelby, Allysah, Tori, Ainzlee, Kaleb, Konnor and Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a scholarship fund for Bailey and Chance at First National Bank in Cooper or Alliance Bank in Commerce, Sulphur Springs or Rockwall. Any of these locations will accept funds for the Lance Thornton Memorial Fund.
Delta Funeral Home of Cooper is in charge of arrangements.
