Joe Stuart Allen, 75, of Commerce, passed away Oct. 4, 2016, in Commerce. His funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. at Commerce Church of Christ with Joel Shelton and David Gibson officiating. Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Commerce Funeral Home.
He was born Jan. 22, 1941, in Sherman, Texas, the son of Mike Allen and Sybil Blackburn Allen. Joe enjoyed anything having to do with being outdoors and spent many hours fishing and boating. Edna and he traveled the roads in their RV upon their retirement. They've been all over the country. Once they'd accomplished that, they seemed to come back to the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado a great deal of the time.
Joe and his family had been faithful members of the Commerce Church of Christ for 34 years. They began attending upon their move to Commerce in 1983. He served the church in several capacities over the years. He was a Bible study teacher as well as on the building committee for the fellowship hall that was added some years ago. Joe chose to serve quietly, behind the scenes, making an impact for the kingdom of God in quiet ways.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Edna; daughter Kelley Anderson and husband Gary; and granddaughter Lindsay Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Sybil Allen; his son, Russell Allen; his brother, Pat Allen and sister Freda Yancey.
Honorary pallbearers for Joe will be Mike Anderson, Howard Lambert, Gary Anderson, Gary Hamm, Joe Davis, Leon Summerlin and Chris Watson.
Rather than flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Commerce Church of Christ, 1900 Culver Street, Commerce, Texas 75428.
