Jerry was born May 1, 1934, in Longview, Texas, to Thurman Booty and Ardell Hogue Matthews; they preceded him in death.
He married the love of his life, Gloria Kathryn Jenkins, on Jan. 22, 1957, in Cooper. She survives him at the family home.
Other survivors include three children, Michael Matthews, Melinda Coffman and Mitzi Cramer; 10 grandchildren, McLane Matthews, Abbey Matthews, Addison Matthews, Mason Coffman, Chaney Coffman, Madeline Coffman. Kennedy Coffman, Quinn Patterson, Connor Patterson and Sydney Patterson; and three great-grandchildren, Bradan Patterson, Maddox Patterson and Annabel Patterson.
Jerry attended Baylor University and transferred to East Texas State University, graduating in 1957. He went on to receive his master's degree in education from East Texas State University. He began his prestigious coaching career shortly thereafter, which included Corsicana High School, San Antonio Lee High School, and East Texas State University. He earned many awards and accolades, including an induction into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. His recent induction into the Texas A&M-Commerce Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015 was a reflection of both his abilities as a basketball and football player, as well as his contributions as the university's head basketball coach.
Coach Matthews was a mentor, friend, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. If he were asked, however, about his greatest achievement, he would tell you it was his 60-year marriage to Gloria.
"I've always loved Gloria." — Coach Jerry Holmes Matthews
