Jerry attended Baylor University and transferred to East Texas State University, graduating in 1957. He went on to receive his master's degree in education from East Texas State University. He began his prestigious coaching career shortly thereafter, which included Corsicana High School, San Antonio Lee High School, and East Texas State University. He earned many awards and accolades, including an induction into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. His recent induction into the Texas A&M-Commerce Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015 was a reflection of both his abilities as a basketball and football player, as well as his contributions as the university's head basketball coach.
Coach Matthews was a mentor, friend, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. If he were asked, however, about his greatest achievement, he would tell you it was his 60-year marriage to Gloria.
