Jean Appleton

November 20, 1936 - July 20, 2013

On July 20, 2013, a most exceptional lady was lost.
Jean Cranford Appleton was born Nov. 20, 1936, in Mt. Vernon.
Her husband, Duaine, predeceased her, as did her parents, A.B. and Helen Pippen Cranford of Commerce; and a brother, Jerry Cranford.
Jean married Duaine J. Appleton on Nov. 14, 1953. Jean and Duaine graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in 1956. They have a son, Duaine Jr. (Dee), and a daughter, Julie. In 1972, the family moved to Plano where Jean pursued her teaching career and completed her M.L.A. at Southern Methodist University. Jean enjoyed her many friends, some lifelong, some for a number of years and some through her affiliation with groups she volunteered her time to — Delta Kappa Gamma, Athena Society, Commerce Educational Enrichment Foundation, Commerce High School Class of ’53, ETSU First Last Dinner Dance Committee, and most recently the ETSU Alumni Board. Her hobbies were reading, shopping, playing bridge, traveling, shopping, and just being with friends and family.
Jean is survived by Dee; his children, Kristy and Alex of Austin and Plano; daughter Julie and husband Craig Campbell, and their son, Duncan, of Austin; her brother, Bill Cranford of Houston; her sister, Judy Summers and her son, Brian Summers, and his wife, Gina, and children Tye and Sierra, of Portland, Ore.
Jean will be lovingly remembered for her grace, poise, sense of humor, intelligence and thoughtfulness.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Aug. 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Plano.
In lieu of flowers, Jean requested donations be made to Commerce Educational Enrichment Foundation, 3315 Washington Street, Commerce, Texas, 75428.
