TEMPE, Ariz. — Ben F. Johnson Jr., 97, formerly of Big Spring, passed away Sept. 8, 2014 in Tempe, Ariz., following complications from a severe fall.
Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Commerce, to Nell Madden and Ben F. Johnson. He graduated from East Texas State Teachers College and was a World War II Army veteran. In 1953, he and his wife, Geraldine, moved to Big Spring where he began his employment at then-Howard County Junior College, serving as academic dean for 26 years. He retired in 1979 and continued to live in Big Spring until moving to Tempe in 2000.
He was a past president of the Big Spring Rotary Club and active in the Buffalo Trail Council of the Boy Scouts. He also served in the leadership of the Texas Junior College Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Big Spring and was an adult men’s Sunday School teacher for many years.
He is survived by Geraldine S. Johnson, his wife of 67 years, of Tempe; two sons, Ben III (Sherrel) of El Dorado, Ark., and Van of Tempe.
